With the Red Cup already all over Instagram, I think it's about time I share with you the greatest Life Hack; how to make an amazing hot chocolate with stuff you (or your mum) probably have in the cupboards. So leave the fancy (and expensive) hot chocolate mix in Tescos and come and experience simplicity.
Now there's nothing to worry about. My house mates and I went to the trouble of making a bazzilion cups a bazzilion different ways to make sure it's 100% perfect. Now, enjoy!
SIMPLE HOT CHOCOLATE RECIPE:
For one cup all you need is:
- 1 tsp rich, dark chocolate powder (like the kind you cook with, 100% cocoa)
- 2 tsp white sugar, to taste (2 sweetens the bitter powder but without loosing the real chocolate taste)
- 1 tsp of water, or near enough!
- 3/4 cup of milk (I won't give you exact measurements because you just need to fill your cup 3/4 of the way so you have room. Measure it in your cup before you add your cocoa etc)
Measure out the milk in your chosen cup to fill 1/2 or 3/4 full. Pour the milk into a pan. Then add the sugar and cocoa powder to your cup add in a little water to make a paste. It takes a bit o' stirrin' but after a few minutes you should have a thick, smooth, glossy mixture.
Warm up the milk on the hob but don't boil it. I set mine in a pan in the hob on a medium heat until it's good and steeeeamy. You can also microwave it but do it for 30 sec intervals until it's just right.
Slowly add your milk, like a tablespoon or so at a time, and give it a good stir to dissolve the chocolate paste. Keep adding the milk until your done, stir well!
You can either indulge in your hot choccy as is or you can go the extra mile with some whipped cream and a shake of cinnamon. I whipped around 150ml of heavy cream with 2 Tbsp of icing sugar and piped it out all fancy*.
*Boyfriend VERY impressed.
